The Reedsburg Beavers continued to play their brand of football on
a cold November day in Beaver Dam and it helped earn their team one
more game. Reedsburg took on Wisconsin Lutheran, the Division 3
defending state champions, and beat them at their own game….running
the ball.
The Vikings came into the game with two runners that had gained over
1,300 yards each on the season and a quarterback that had thrown 13
touchdown passes. The Beaver defense bent, but did not break as they
allowed 190 yards rushing to a team that had been averaging more than
200 yards per game. Reedsburg fed off of turnovers by recovering 4
of the 6 fumbles by the Vikings and intercepting Klein twice in the
second half.
Mike Lennon carried the ball for 164 yards on 15 carries for 1
touchdown, while Tyler Mazur added another 161 yards on 28 carries
for 3 touchdowns. Mazur completed 1 of 3 passes, but that one
completion was to Justin Huinker. Huinker turned that one reception
into a 34 yard touchdown to complete the scoring for the day.
Justin had scored the first touchdown of the game on a 1 yard run.
The Beavers won the game 40-20.
This team has already made history for Reedsburg Area High School.
They are the first Reedsburg football team to play for a state title.
Every year as teams prepare to start their season, players, coaches
and fans dream and hope their team can make it to “state”.
Unfortunately, only fourteen teams are able to fulfill that dream
every year and only seven of those teams go home as “State Champions”.
These Beavers are one of the fourteen, we will all learn after the
final whistle on Friday if they are one of the seven “State Champions”.
What I can say right now is, This team is most importantly A Team of
Champions. No matter what the score shows at the end of the game on
Friday, these players and coaches have persevered over the last three
years. They have worked and bought into a team philosophy that has
improved with every game. They have united through the tough times and
are now enjoying the rewards that have come from that hard work. Led by
seniors in learning a tough never quit work ethic, the have earned
themselves every teams dream to end a season:
